Downsizing

Downsizing, one clear step at a time

Downsizing can feel overwhelming, but we have one golden rule: don’t worry about what you don’t want. Start by deciding what you want to take with you and what matters most. Everything else can be dealt with afterward. And when you don’t want to manage all those remaining decisions yourself, Smooth Transitions can handle the rest.

The golden rule

Don’t worry about what you don’t want

Start with what you love, need, and want to take with you. You don’t need to make a separate decision about every single thing you own. Focus first on what matters enough to come with you.

Once you know what you’re keeping, deciding what happens to the rest becomes much easier.

The practical heart

How the pieces fit together

01

Start with a plan, not a box

You don't have to have every answer before you begin. Start with what you know, what you want, and what decisions need to be made next. A good plan gives you a place to start and can change as your move takes shape.

02

Decide what to keep, gift, sell, or let go

Start with what you love, need, and want to take with you. Then remember our golden rule: don't worry about what you don't want. You don't need to make a separate decision about every single thing you own. Focus first on what matters enough to come with you. Once you know what you're keeping, deciding what happens to the rest becomes much easier.

03

Plan your new, smaller space

Knowing what will fit makes deciding what to take much easier. Measure your new space and the furniture you hope to bring, then create a floor plan before packing begins. Smooth Transitions can create your floor plan and help you decide what works in your new home before move day. That means fewer surprises, less unnecessary moving, and a new home that feels comfortable from the start.

04

One team for the whole move

A move is easier when one team coordinates every step. Smooth Transitions can handle the sorting, packing, movers, unpacking, setup, and final clear-out of the home you're leaving behind. Instead of managing all the pieces yourself, you can simply show up to a new home that is ready for you. From beginning to end, we take care of the details so you don't have to.

Estate sales and auctions

How estate sales and auctions work

What to expect when selling what you leave behind.

There is no one-size-fits-all way to handle the belongings you leave behind. It starts with a consultation. We look at what you have, its condition, your timeline, your home, and even practical considerations such as access and parking. From there, we determine which combination of estate sale, auction, or other options makes the most sense.

When an estate sale is appropriate, the items are organized, priced, and displayed for an on-site sale. An auction works differently: one of our auction partners evaluates the contents and selects the items they believe have an auction market. In either case, a percentage of the proceeds is retained for conducting the sale, and those details are explained before you make a decision.

And sometimes both make sense. After an estate sale, there are almost always belongings left behind. We may then bring in an auction partner for appropriate remaining items, donate useful goods to our charity partners, and responsibly dispose of what truly has no remaining use.

That flexibility is an important part of what Smooth Transitions offers. We are not a one-size-fits-all company. We use the right combination of options for your home, your belongings, and your situation.

Thoughtful dispersal

Handling what stays behind, with care

Once you’ve moved the things you’re taking with you, we take care of what remains in the home you’re leaving behind. We call this thoughtful dispersal: finding the best next place for each item whenever possible, whether through family, sale, donation, or responsible disposal. You can focus on settling into your new home, knowing what you left behind was handled thoughtfully and with respect.

When you want it done for you, we handle the whole thing: sorting room by room, planning the new floor plan, running the estate sale, and getting your furniture placed before move day. When you would rather do more yourself, reach out and we will point you to the right starting place.

From the first decision to the final detail, Smooth Transitions can guide and manage the entire transition. One trusted local team, there for you every step of the way.
